This system can be run by a 12 volt or 24 volt system. It can be run by deep cycle batteries. PV panels can be used to charge the batteries. To determine the size of the panels needed, you will want to determine the total vertical lift for your application.

volts x amps = watts so
24 x 4.6 = 110.4

So the wattage requirement for this pump is slightly less than 111 watts.

To determine what solar panels you will require for this 24 volt SHURflo pump, you will first want to determine the total vertical lift for your application, please see below...

A= The vertical distance in feet from ground level to level of water in your elevated storage tank.

B= The vertical distance in feet from level of water in your well when pumping up to ground level.

C= The vertical distance in feet from level of water in well when pumping, to pump position in well.

Total Vertical Lift = A + B + C

Once you collect the necessary data, I have provided a few examples for the minimum solar array you will need depending on your vertical lift listed below...

If your total vertical lift is 20 feet you would need 58 watts of total power at 1.5 amps.

If your total vertical lift is 100 feet you would need 99 watts of total power at 2.6 amps.

If your total vertical lift is 230 feet you would need 155 watts of total power at 4.1 amps.

The SHURflo 24 Volt Submersible Solar Pump may work in an artesian well, as long as the pump itself would stay submersed in water. The pump will function and stay primed, even if under pressure, as long as it is continually submersed in water.

The purpose of the control box is to turn the pump on and off. If you hook the pump directly to a battery, you would still need some type of on/off switch to hook to the pump so it would work.

SHURflo Submersible Solar Pump - 1/2in. Ports, 82 GPH, 24 Volt, Model# 9325-043-101 5 5 1 1

So far, so good Application: moving surface (pond) water for garden, livestock watering. Pump mounted to floating dock in center of pond, this keeps pump away from muddy pond bank, maintains pump at correct depth in water during fluctuations in pond water level. Extra filtering added to pump enclosure, approx. 30 feet lift/600 feet lateral travel with 1/2" poly pipe tubing to series of 375 gal. storage tanks. Storage tank on high ground produces sufficient pressure for drip irrigation of garden, filling of livestock water troughs, etc. Pump moves 1 GPM average on 12V panel - direct operation. Factory rep. said pump could be used without controller with less than optimal performance and so far so good. To determine p.v. panel sizing we first hooked pump to 12V battery to check power draw, pump drew 21 watts @ 12V. in the above described installation. Pump connected to old 50W. 12V solar panel, no battery or controller used, and is moving around 700 gal./day in early June in S.E. Okla. Now approaching 70 days operation without mishaps or maintenance issues. Pump moves more water than we need and is turned off about 1/3 of the time. I like everything about the pump (except initial outlay of course!) but it is early days yet - will see how it does over time. Harvested first corn today - corn that I would not have planted without first having this pump. pvpowermonger - all p.v. all the time June 8, 2011
