Installs into flue of your wood, oil or coal furnace or heater (except Item# 172781 which is only for use with gas stoves). Magic Heat™ Reclaimer consists of 10 heat-exchanger tubes and a thermostatically controlled fan to blow warmed air into the room. Turns on at 150° and off at 110°F. 115 Volts. Produces 225 CFM and 8000 to 30,000 BTU. Peak performance is maintained by the use of Flue Stove Pipe cleaner (our Item# 172801). 18 1/4in.H x 10 5/8in.W x 14 1/4in.D. Any Dangers?

Details:

Has anyone heard of chimney fires while using these units? Condensation of gasses increasing the creosote amt. esp. in cold temps ?

Answers

The unit comes with a soot scraper plate to help remove soot which reduces the chance of fire. In cold temperatures the manufacturer recommends the fire to burn at the temperature of 280 degrees F up to 1000 degrees F, to help reduce the amount of soot.

I've not heard any increase in fire dangers related to the use of the heat reclaimer. The mfr does have recommendations to help keep it clean. It appears that if you give your chimney the attention it needs over time you'll not experience any issues.

The Magic heat Reclaimer does require a power source. The fan on the reclaimer operates on 110/120v. You need it plugged into an outlet that has constant power to it, not on an outlet that is operated by a switch.

Yes - standard outlet, not-switched. You need a constant power source as the unit turns on automatically when it heats up and off when it cools off. You do NOT want to run this without power, such as a power outage because if it gets too hot it can be damaged.

Only upright for wood and coal due to the potential buildup of ashes and creosote in the unit. The scraper is designed to remove buildup only in the upright position. Horizontal position is only OK for gas. Without the buildup issue, it could work in any position.

No, I have had this installed on my oil furnace at a 40 degree angle since 2008 with no problems and works just fine, I would definitely clean the bottom out occasionally though, as it will collect ash.

It can be used on class A chimney pipe, if the pipe is only used for extra insulation not for draft. It has to be fitted on the inside pipe.

yes, I did this in New Jersey. There are many types of class a chimney pipe and you may have to buy a short connector. I installed it between the furnace and the first section of double pipe and did not require anything. Just cut the existing pipe to allow space for the reclaimer.

I completely agree you should achieve the same results. The Magic Heat Reclaimer operates off hot flue gasses and if the temperature is high then the Reclaimer will certainly help, however if your stack temp is around 300 to 350 then the reclaimer may cause more damage. You need around 300 to 350 (ideal) degrees ferenheit up your chimney, lower temps will possibly cause moisture in the chimney and create ice. I have seen it before not with a magic heat reclaimer but on heating units with a low stack temp of 250 to 275 degrees up the chimney and have seen the results from a plugged chimney with ice to unlined chimneys falling over because the moisture mixed with the chemicals in the flue gasses ate the morter between the bricks/blocks.. I am not sure at how clean a coal stove burns but if you get a trace of smoke at the chimney when the coal unit is running make sure you use the scraping plate to clean the tubes alittle more frequently then recommended.

It depends upon local codes, but in general it's usually about 18 inches. I've used a sheet metal heat shield to reduce the distance as needed.

I believe it is 15 inches recommended. If you have a safe distance between the vertical stove pipe, you should be fine with this unit in place.

It can be used on a pellet stove if the chimney is professionally installed with a negative draft chimney that has a mercury column measurement of .06" before installation and .045" below the unit after installation.

Pellet stoves, generally speaking, already use this concept to squeeze as much heat out of the pellets as possible. You'll notice the flu gas coming from your pellet stove is fairly low temperature as it is. Attempting to install one of these on a pellet stove may not be worth the investment.

While it may be possible to install more than one heat reclaimer per stove, it is not recommended. These units are specifically engineered to be installed one unit per stove. Installing more than one per stove will have a minimal gain in the heat that is "reclaimed". Also, installing more than one per stove will have a detrimental effect on flue temperatures and could cause drafting problems and excessive creosote buildup. Northern Tool does recommend or condone the use of more than one heat reclaimer per heating device or any installation that is in any way contrary to the specific instructions that are supplied by the manufacturer of this unit.

Manufacturer recommends one unit per stove. Using more causes flu gasses to reach really low temps, allowing creosote to build up very quickly.

One Magic heat Reclaimer per heating unit is more then sufficient. With more then one, it is possible that the first one closest to the heating unit will work properly and the others would never come on or more then likely the other reclaimers would short cycle, on/off- on /off- on/off .

I would not recommend more than one per stove. These units can substantially reduce your flue temp thusly adding to creosote buildup. I don't have any problems with mine and it really helps heat my shop. Would highly recommend.

You need the electricity to run the fan unit inside the reclaimer. Running the stove without the fan would allow the heat exchanger tubes to overheat, eventually leading to failure.

Instructions from manufacturer give direction on how to remove electrical components should stove need to be used during a power outage, but also advise to keep stove flue temperatures low as to not damage heat exchanger.

Manual sez to remove the fan unit if power goes out. Can still run as long as tubes do not get red hot enough to break seal and kill you with CO fumes. Don't know why you would disable this feature. Air needs to flow thru the tubes to get the heat out of the unit and into the room.

the answer to your question is no the blower would not operate with out power. The magic heat reclaimer would be an expensive flue pipe adapter with out power to operate the fan it comes equipped with. The fan operates by a thermal disc. as the heating appliance runs and the stack pipe increases temperature, the disc closes the circuit and the fan comes on blowing the heat into the room/ usually the basement. Even after the heating unit shuts down the reclaimer fan may come on once or twice for shorter cycles. this is normal. You can run a heavy duty extension cord to the unit however make sure that it is secured well and not laying on any part of the flue pipe, the reclaimer or the heating appliance and is away from any moving parts. Also make sure it is plugged into an outlet that has constant power and not one that turns off by a switch. good luck.

No, it does not work without electricity. The magic heat is an air to air heat exchanger. The blower takes room air and blows it through stainless steel tubes. The tubes are heated by the Flue (exhaust) gas. As the room air passes through the tubes, it "extracts" heat from the flue gas.

Any way to use this heat reclaimer with an outdoor wood boiler?

Details:

We have an oil fired boiler with old radiators in our 1846, mostly uninsulated house. We had an outdoor wood boiler installed a couple of years ago and will be using it exclusively to heat this winter. I was reading all the great reviews on the Magic Heat reclaimer and wondered if there is any way at all to use one with our present heating system.

In all honesty, not really. The porpose of the reclaimer is to dump heat from the stack pipe into the room where the boiler is located before it goes out the chimney serving two purposes, the first to reduce the amount of heat lose and second heat a space that would not have gotten heated in the first place (usually basement). I would not fabricate any type of duct work because the plate scraper handle would then be concealled in the ductwork. sorry but this unit wouldn't work well in your application for installation of an outside wood boiler.

If you have an "outside" wood boiler, then this is not for you. You would need an insulated air duct from your house out to the wood boiler's smoke stack, where the Magic Heat needs to be installed, then another insulated air duct to bring the hot air back to the house. NOT practical.

Excellent Product - Performs as advertised I've been using the Magic Heat Reclaimer for the past 2 years. It has far exceeded my expectations. I attached the Magic Heat to my wood burning stove in my 1800 sq/ft hobby shop. The ceiling is open to the rafters and at the peak the height is 20 ft. Before the Magic Heat the stove failed to heat the entire building on cold days. With the Magic Heat I can keep the building toasty. Money well spent! April 26, 2013

heat exchanger I had been using a different heat exchanger with moderate satisfaction , But when it failed I purchased the "Magic heat" exchanger . I was very surprised at how much better this unit was compared to the other one. The Magic Heat has twice the heating tubes as the other one and I particularly like the function that lets you clean off the tubes keeping the heat reclamation at an efficient level. Also the fan seems to be stronger and heats up my 1600sf + shop much quicker. I should have gotten this unit first as the few extra bucks I spent payed for itself the first time I used it. Worth every penny If you have a stove with a pipe buy a Magic Heat. If you don't know the difference now you will after you have installed it. I am burning about 1/3 less wood and my home is warmer than before. So glad I bought it! April 23, 2013

Works great but a little noisy. The Magic Heat works great but it would be a little noisy for your Living Room. I installed a new Wood Stove in my Basement. I added the Magic Heat and I'm really glad I did. I ran some ductwork to help direct the heat to the first floor. The fan moves 200 cfm so I installed one register in my Living Room and another in the main Hallway. The stove does a nice job of heating the Basement and the Magic Heat does anice job of heating the first floor. The entire set up works great !! October 18, 2012

Product walks the talk. I needed to circulate heat from my downstairs woodstove between two parts of the house. I bought this from Northern Tool in 2003 and never had the chance to put it in, until this past weekend. Yes, I know, 9 years. Well, long story short, this was the best investment I have ever made in terms of heat circulation, EVER. This is heat that otherwise would have been lost to the outside. I took my sweeet time putting this together, getting the right sheet metal screws, cutting the proper length on the stovepipes, etc. and it took a total of 35 min to put in. Within an hour, the temperature in the room next door, up by 5 degrees, within the next three hours, up by 15 degrees making it equal with the other room and the bonus was it pushed the heat upstairs and got to the back corner of the house.. I am very impressed and this will be standard issue on all my houses! Thank you for carrying this product Northern Tool! October 15, 2012

Works great! After reading the previous reviews I had high hopes and this product delivers. Pros: It produces a lot more heat than our wood stove with just a fan ever did. It cut our fuel use by about 35%. Cons: It's a little on the noisy side. As another reviewer wrote, it produces nasty smoke the first time you fire it (so pick a day you can open the windows!). After 3 years we'd never go back to heating without it. September 22, 2012
