It is mostly metal with plastic protectors over the spinning blade. Some plastic on the knobs that tighten the guides. Motor housing and support frame are a good solid metal.

Yes it is. Ordinarily I would say order nothing from China except for rice. I have to say though this is an exception. I love mine and I would recommend it. It is a replica of the Oregon 511-A. All metal body strong motor. Only the handles are plastic. Excellent buy. Save lots of $ for basically the same grinder.
See my review. There are a few cons but nothing that cannot be corrected in minutes. This is definately not the kind of quality that you would expect from China. I do not think you would regret this purchase. I sure don't.

That is the chain I sharpen all the time. Use the 1/8" the 1st coulple of times then you can use the 3/16".

The Chain Sharpener #193020 will sharpen a chain with a 3/8 pitch and a .050 gauge. The correct wheel size for that chain is a 1/8 grinding disc.

It depends on the brand of chain saw you have, but most are close to the same, I have stihl saws and mine are 60 degrees for the wheels angle and 30 degrees for the chain angle, if need be ask who may have sharpened your chains before, or the dealer of your chain saws, you'll like the sharpener, I use it alot, good luck....

The inside mark is for Left hand cutters and the outside mark is for right hand cutters. Set the chainsaw in front of you and look down the bar. If the top plate working corner of a tooth is pointing to the left then it is a left hand cutter. if it points to the right then it is a right hand cutter.

After sharpening awhile, the grinding edge of the grinding wheel needs to be "dressed" to restore it to its original shape. Does this sharpener have that feature?

Will this machine grind the blade guides?

Details:

Blade guides have to be re-sized as the blades or teeth wear down. Blade guides determine the depth of cut. Not re-sizing your guides will greatly diminish your cutting speed. Will this machine take care of this action?

yes, but I found it is easier to use the old file and guide to do this. With my chains the grinding wheel would need to be changed to a wider one to do this. You can leave he chain on the sharpener and use the file and guide though...

Tried and True I normally cut between 10 and 15 ricks of firewood each season. As an old firewood cutter, I have always touched up my chainsaw chains in the woods, using a file. That works fine for a few times, but if your not an expert, you will eventually have uneven cutters, and need to have them trued up by a chainsaw shop. I have been paying $5.00 per chain to have my chains sharpened by a professional. I decided that at this price, I would give it a try. It takes about 15 minutes to assemble and adjust the sharpener, and a little more, if you mount it on a bench, as I have done. I did a trial run on a chain which I thought was beyond use. I goofed on the first cutter, and made it too short. After getting the hang of it, I sharpened the rest of that chain in a couple of minutes. It became addictive, and I sharpened 5 more chains in less than 10 minutes. The guide keeps everything straight, and all of the cutters come out the same. I saved nearly a quarter of the cost of the sharpener in less than an hour. Now my friends bring their chains to have them trued up, and sadly for me, I don't charge anything. If I charged for my service, I could have paid for the tool many times. If your goal is to have a proffesionally sharpened, straight cutting chainsaw, look no further. This tool works as well as any I have seen in the chainsaw shops, and since they are my chains, I take the time to get a better job. Next on my wish list is a chain breaker, and rivet spinner. Very handy but not quite great I have had this sharpener for a couple of years now. It is smooth running has a quite motor and sharpens my chains with ease. My only complaint is the piece on the bottom that keeps the angle from moving around. Mine will not stay tight. I have to constantly check to make sure that it has not slipped. good but not the best i have had my sharpener for three years cut about 30 or more cords of wood a year. it works well for the quality there are many other brands desinged the same i have used a couple for the money this product is the best buy it workes just as well as the carlton one i used and alot cheeper it has minor flaws but a good choice for me April 23, 2013

good for the price good product, but the instructions are really bad. After putting it together it took a while to figure out how to use it properly because the instructions are so bad. After some practice, i can sharpen chains as good or better than i can by hand, but much faster. Its comparable to the much more expensive oregon sharpener, but with cheaper materials and finish. Great product This is a great product that works well for a reduced price. I have used more expensive models and this one works just as well for a fraction of the price. I would have given it 5 stars but the documentation is lacking. It also had some wrong settings for my Stihl chains. Northern is a great company to purchase from. Easy and helpful. April 23, 2013

Nice, but with a little issue Bought this to replace an older, less expensive sharpener. Unit does a nice job sharpening due to the numerous stops that can be set up. Did have to replace the unit after 1 month- one of the metal rotational hinges snapped and made the unit unusable. Returned for a replacement- seems that the hinge may be an issue on this sharpener. Have to keep on eye on the metal pin that is involved with the hinge. It will back out on it's own and when it does, one more rotation to sharpen and snap the hinge goes. I did notice this prior to the hinge having an issue and will keep an eye on the metal pin / hinge. April 23, 2013

140$ After sharpening about 7 chains this sharpener decided to start turning itself off!! Now that's not 7 chains in a row that is 2 or 3 sit downs! Now the assembly and mounting were easy enough and when the product was running it worked pretty well, some of the adjusters seem to wiggle loose all the time but understand we are not talking a top of the line!!! So that said its prob. a good product i just didn't get a good one and have to deal with driving 45 min. each way and hope for a no hassle exchange! April 13, 2013
