Overview

This NorthStar® Horizontal/Vertical Log Splitter is powered by a quality Honda GC engine. The 4in. x 24in. cylinder splits logs up to 25in.L in either in a vertical or horizontal position. Features a 2-stage Barnes pump, which decreases cycle time by delivering high flow/low pressure when there is no resistance and low flow/high pressure when cutting through a log to reduce travel time and increase productivity. Uses a horizontal-shaft engine, engineered for a long life. Add the exclusive NorthStar 4-way wedge wings (Item# 1143, sold separately) to quarter logs in one split instead of three.

Outstanding Machine,

"I am very satisfied with what I would refer to as an outstanding machine. Assembly required the use of my front end loader as a hoist to lift the main beam into place, but other than that the rest was relativly easy.
The first time I used it all it took was a couple of pulls and the engine was running and it has not skipped a beat ever since.
Using the splitter sure beats swinging a splitting maul because I have not had anything that I can handle, that the splitter can't split, including oak up to twenty inches in diameter and twenty inches long.
There are a couple of things things I would recommend, one is a steel or brass hose adapter in the oil tank outlet, the nylon hose adapter which came from the factory was distorted, collapsed, and leaked. I replaced mine with a brass adapter. The other would be a sharper leading edge on the splitting wedge which would result in a cleaner less ragged block split."

"if you want a piece of equipment up to the task of splitting 5-6 cord of wood in a couple of days this machine will do it. If your like me and want to split the wood 1 cord at a time this machine will have you doubling that with ease. Just add the optional cutting edge and Oh My God. "An excellent piece of equipment. Not a toy at all. Very heavily constructed. Some challenge during assembly but nothing that common sense can't overcome. Splits very well with a single wedge, but is worth a quad wedge.
Has really saved my back. Moves well over rough terrain. I like the safety feature of the return pocket and the return to neutral power valve."

A Lot Of Metal For The Money,

"I have used a few log splitters in this capacity class before and this is definitely the best of the bunch. I've had it for about three months now and it has split everything I have thrown at it, crotchety wood included. The Honda engine is easy starting and relatively quiet running. There is a lot of metal in this machine and it has dual outriggers to handle it. The wedge is a unique cast piece instead of the usual slab of steel but I did take an angle grinder to it to sharpen it up. The log cradles are the icing on the cake, sturdy and indispensible. My one small complaint is the four worm gear hose clamps were poor quality so I replaced them. Northern comes through again!"

"I just brought this home about 2 days ago, and it has run great so far. The assembly was easy, although a bit more difficult without a helper.

After you complete the assembly, run it for an hour or so, then check all the fasteners again. You may find that some have loosened up as you split the first couple dozen logs. After I re-tightened everything, I've had no problems since, but I may still weld up the pieces that I'll never have a reason to take apart.

The wedge wings are a great addition, but may bog it down a bit in larger logs. To help prevent this, don't set the logs all the way back against the I-beam.

The only thing I've done for modification is to add a return line filter and a filter breather cap."

"I found this splitter to be a great splitter for the price. This splitter has performed flawlessly the Honda engine has performed very well. I really don't see a need for any thing bigger than 22 ton for the average homeowner I have split some pretty good size elm, oak, and maple and this splitter has handled it all with ease.I would recommend this splitter to any one that has to deal with 6 or more chords of wood to be split."

What is the PRACTICAL advantage of the 30-ton splitter vs the 22-ton splitter???

Answers

The practical advantage is that you will be able to split larger diameter harder wood with a 30 ton splitter without stalling the hydraulics than you would be able to with a 22 ton. The 30 ton splitter is able apply 16,000 lbs. more force to a log. If you regularly split woods like oak or ironwood I would definitely recommend going to a 30 ton splitter.
