"I Purchased the insert in October of 2009. Just in time to make it ready for the heating season. The insert arrived in 4 days by truck. I dollied it into my den fireplace area. I built up the height of the shipping carton an slid it right into the fireplace. I left enough room to allow working on the flue damper removal. Removed the damper and lined the clay lined chimney with a 6" stainless chimney liner with aluminum foil over 1" rock wool insulation installed a chimney cap topside and connected the liner to the stove flue outlet. The whole project took about 8 hours. Pushed the insert into place installed the finishing plate and have used it to offset the heating expense of making a 52 foot bi-level comfortably warm.
I have cut my gas consumption about in half I burned 4 cords of wood from November to March. Sometimes needed a fan in the stairwell because it was too warm downstairs. My advice do not skimp; get a good stainless liner and insulate it. It will not only allow the insert to function more efficiently because it will draft properly but will also lessen the risk of a Creosote fire in your chimney. I am well pleased with the performance of the Drolet Fireplace Wood Insert, Model# DB03120 and would not hesitate to recommend it."

"Great affordable stove... I had a small budget and old existing wood burning fireplace. Did my homework and this stove had the best price and included all i need to get up and going. I would recommend getting the listed accessories that are listed by the stove. Heavy but with a furniture doley and two people you can move this well built stove around. This last winter 2009 burned 3.5 cords off wood and it kept us warm. Blower on front side works well... The hardest part was relining my chimney with the specified diameter chimney liner"

Drolet stove,

"This stove is awesome! A gem to install and even easier to operate! It heats my whole house (1800 sq. ft.) and keeps it at a balmy 70-72 degrees. The air wash glass is a real plus. The key is to keep your cealing fans operating to even out the heat and use good, dry hard wood. The winter here in central NJ was brutal and I didn't get a heating bill for two months. Buy it now and start splitting your wood! PS you might want to check out the splitters here at Northern as well, some great buys!!!"

"I've spent my first winter with the Drolet and I must say I'm impressed. I don't think you can find a similar value anywhere else. This unit drafts well and puts out a good amount of heat. The blower is required to disperse the heat with any real effectiveness though. I have burned both cord wood and the Envi-8 compressed-sawdust logs and I am happy with both."

"I purchased this stove based on the excellent price compared to what was available elsewhere at nearly twice the cost. I read prior reviews and knew I was taking a chance since many of the reviewers were from Southern climes and few broached the 45th Parallel North where we're planning to move to. First impression was very positive with the quality of the stove itself but a little concerned about the size of the firebox (it looks smaller than it is until you start stoking it- it'll hold a few good 18" sticks with a full bed of coals). I need to subsidize propane heat in an 1800 sq ft home and was hoping this stove would be up for 1100 sq feet of that.

Installation is simple though directions for chimney liner attachment could be expanded on. There are steel tabs provided that I think need to be tapped to mount to the stove. Only 3 sheetmetal screws were included, I assume to attach the provided tabs to the liner. Once I secured the liner to my liking I cured the stove in 3 successive small fires as recommended. My wife and I have heated with wood in many types of stoves and we were both impressed with the length and efficiency of each fire (not to mention how beautiful the glass door makes it).

As others have stated, there is no thermostatic control of the fan other than initial start requiring about an hour of burn time before it'll come on. Once on it is very quiet regardless of how high you adjust the speed. The following weekend we arrived to a 40 degree house and I decided to see what the stove could do on it's own. Weather degraded into the mid-30's during the day with mixed rain, snow and wind. Overnight there was a hard frost- not a sub-zero test but good enough to test a subsidy heat source.

The temperature started to rise in the 1100 foot combined area of Living Room, Kitchen, Dining Room with, master BR and master bath. Once the fan kicked in the temperature steadily rose and with a single ceiling fan on low all of these areas came up to 72 degrees with the stove choked way back and burning slow. When the temp climbed to 75 degrees we opened up the other 700sq ft of the house to get some cooler air to mix in and choked the stove completely. I let the fire burn down to complete coals before restoking or it would have been too warm and I would have to open windows. We never did turn any propane heat on. Success!

I went to bed early and woke to a stove that was still slightly warm (with the fan still on). Now that it's May we are looking forward to next Fall and Winter so we can really enjoy the stove and I am confident that it will be the primary heat source in our retirement home."

Works Great with a few quirks.,

"I purchased this insert back in fall of 09 to replace an old buck stove with a hearth mounted blower box. Basically, the price was right, and the reviews were good. Our house is about 1800sf, and primary heat source is propane. However, I can truly say that this winter the stove has already paid me back half its price. Normally I have to fill my propane tank twice in the winter; this time, I have refilled it only once, back in late Dec, and this is in spite of the very very cold temperatures we have had. I can't wait to see how much propane I save on a normal winter! Starting it is very easy, and I always have hot embers left over from the previous night to help starting the next fire. I installed a new flexible SS liner up my chimney when I installed the new stove; so now, the draft is so good that everyone in my family will start a fire, not just me. The glass is easily cleaned as other reviewers have noted; just wet a towell or rag and rub some of the ashes. Since the firebox is small, I usually have to empty it about once a day or once every other day. I have to keep my eye on the door hinge pins, they do work themselves up over time.

The air wash system is works wonderfully, my wife is thrilled to be able to see the fire.

Installation was not difficult. The faceplate went together easily, although the little clips can spring out occasionally. Also, there is only one place to attach the trim to the faceplate, a little 1/2" screw that takes a little finesse to tighten. Make sure you tighten this screw all the way up and snug so that the bottom of the faceplate top piece does not block airflow.

Also, there was some packing cardboard that was stuck in the air plenum that I didn't notice until just before I fired it.

After month or so of usage, I noticed the stove rocked back and forth, evidently it warped. There are some jacking bolts in the rear of the stove that can adjust for this.

Regarding the blower, the power cord came out the opposite side of my hearth receptacle. Therefore, I had to move the power cord entrance. There is already a knockout for this; so I just removed the cord and grommet and moved them to the other side. Perhaps Drolet could build the blower assembly so that the user has the option of which side the cord comes out; i.e., left or right.

Also, I bypassed the thermostat that others have done. I noticed that the thermostat sensing element was held on by one screw; perhaps two screws would hold it tighter to the housing and then help heat conduction and perhaps a faster "on" time. Perhaps this would eliminate some of the complaints.

Also, because of how the top plate attaches over the blower, there is a gap against the insert front, just below the door opening, that tends to collect ash. I Haven't opened up the blower yet to see, but I would bet that it is getting dirty in the blower housing; a simple vacuum job should take care of this, perhaps no more than once a season.

In all, this little stove has alreedy save me major bucks on propane and was not that hard to install. I would recommend it."

DROLET WOOD STOVE INSERT,

"My wife and I have really enjoyed the efficiency and quietness of this insert. It was one of two models that were small enough to fit in the opening created by the removal of a Heatilator fireplace which was very inefficient. and noisy. It takes about 45 minutes of burning to activate the blower and the wood burning area is relatively shallow which necessitates the frequent removal of ashes to prevent them from spilling onto the blower housing. Other than these two annoyances, I highly recommend this wood stove."

"We have enjoyed our dorlet fireplace wood insert, model#DB320 for two months now. We have high cellings and was loosing most of our heat with our open fireplace, so we decided to try this incert. At first I wasn't sure it would be big enough to do the job, but now we are very pleased with the amount of heat saved and also it takes smaller pices of wood and my wife can load the incert with no problem. It also improved the looks of the whole room. You do not have to spend alot of money to get a good looking and energy efficence incert."

"I like the insert very much. It is smaller than I thought but it does heat real well and is very nice looking. If you purchase this item make sure you get the serial number (the right side of insert) or SBI will not be able to track your purchase if you have any problems"

"I am truly amazed that this insert heats my entire house quite easily (1200sqft colonial). The hardest part of the install was working with the stainless steel flue liner and trying to form the bends up to the insert. I do have 2 critiques though; 1) The temp sensor for the blower should turn on at a much lower temp to make the operation even more efficient, 2) The addition of an ash tray underneath would be a great addition for maintenance.

Overall, I am very happy with the insert and would definitely recommend it to others. A great unit especially considering the great price."
