"From someone who has to have every two of every tool and one who has cut hundreds of cords of wood, its a tool you gotta have. Obviously it's not as easy as a powered splitter, but its the best manual splitter I've ever tried and I've tried many. Pro's, it will split most 18" long logs up to a foot in diameter in one shot once you practice a little. Larger logs may take an extra swing or two. Cons, it's 12 pounds, but its also the weight that makes it work. The handle and neck are literally indestructable and a tool you will buy once in your life. PS, when splitting wood of any kind, its best to have it on a hard surface (not on soft ground) so all of the force is transfered to the wood. I place all of my wood on a stump which sits on a concrete pad. Best of Luck. Tony"

"The Truper splitting maul is not for the faint-hearted. I've been splitting wood by hand for over 25 years, and I've gone through one axe-handle after another, and all of them eventually fatigued and cracked. The Truper maul will last a lifetime! It is heavy, and the handle is a bit shorter than a convenional axe/ maul, so one will have to adjust his or her stance, but it's worth the adjustment. One potential drawback for some may be the wedge shape which makes penetration into the cracks in the grain a little harder than a conventional maul, but with a little more force, it's amazing the size logs one can splitt without additional wedges."

"I used this to split a white and red oak approx. 24" across. I'd cut it to 16-18" length and split it right away so I could carry it to my trailer. I wouldn't want this as my only maul but well made and weel worth the money."

"These kind of splitting mauls are not for the faint of heart. They really give you a workout but they do what they are designed to do - split wood. The head never sticks and never comes loose. One should last a lifetime. I'm on my second - ran the first one over with the tractor and bent the handle all to heck!"

"the handle is too short to swing effectively. Useful as a wedge, but not as a maul.

Well, maybe if you are no taller than 5 ft 2 inches, but I am 6 ft."

"I have used this maul to split several cords of wood. I use a 5 pound axe for the smaller pieces and use the maul for the big stuff or problem pieces. Most big pieces split with one hit, maybe two. A longer handle would be a nice upgrade. The rubber grip needed some glue to keep it on. Overall it does the job and has kept me from buying a $1,000. + hydrolic splitter"

"this maul works great for splitting firewood. the only flaws i found with it are the handle seems a little short and the foam grip will slip a little after swinging for awhile. otherwise the tringle head and the 12 lb. weight really help power through the wood without getting stuck in those stubborn pieces."
