cracked block I have a kohler courage engine in my Toro riding mower. If i could give it less stars, i would. This engine is junk for how much it is. Mine made it 75 hours, cracked the block. Mind you i have a 1/2 acre lot, only mow grass, never gets tall, changed oil /filter at 20, and 50 hours. Never been beat on. Stored in a heated garage over winter. Now looking for a better quality engine. Very poor quality. October 15, 2012

Cracked Block I have this engine in a Troy Bilt Bronco that I purchased in the summer of 2005. The head gasket and valve cover bolt were never tightened properly and they leaked oil the first year. This summer, the right side of the engine cracked and oil blew out the crack. I would not recommend this engine. I've been mowing since I was a kid and I'm almost 60 now. I have never seen a mower engine to this--never. July 14, 2009

Expensive for what you get I was rather intrigued when Kohler introduced this engine, and couldn't wait to try one out on an old Snapper riding mower I had laying around with a blown rod. However, I wound up disappointed. Pros? Plenty of power. This engine runs smoothly and performs adequately. I like the inverted oil filter. I can finally change the oil on my rider without spilling it everywhere when I remove the filter. It's also fairly quiet, and bolted right up to my rider. Wiring needed minimal adaptation. Furthermore, the air filter seals well - better than a Briggs - and won't leak if properly installed and maintained. The problem with the Courage engine is that it is not made like an $ 800 + engine should be made. It feels and sounds flimsy. You have to remove the blower housing to change a spark plug. Plus, oil began to leak from my engine's cork/composite valve-cover gasket almost as soon as I broke it in. Oh! Did I mention that the Courage engine uses nylon (yes, NYLON) camshafts? I know it works and is common practice now, but, honestly, do you really want to fork over $ 850.00 for an engine with polymer parts in the crankcase? You know, they can melt if the engine overheats. Yeah. I would rather have saved my money and purchased a commercial-grade Kohler Command engine instead. That's a much better value than this innovative - if expensive - powerplant.
