Much better than advertised
I worked in the HVAC/Sheet Metal Fabrication trade for 25 years and am used to using professional grade equipment costing thousands of dollars. The picture makes this shear look much smaller; it is actually almost 4 feet tall and more than 18 inches front to back.
The packaging appeared very careless, with the instruction manual mangled and in a heap under the shear and a few pieces of cardboard - but the tool itself is fantastic, heavy, solid and smooth.
One foot was slightly bent, easily hammered straight . The spring return action is excellent and I like the hole they put in there to insert something and prevent accidental closure of the jaws. I think it's unrealistic to expect industrial grade performance from an economy priced shear (come on guys!), and was very happy to see that you can make longer than 12" cuts by simply moving the work deeper into the jaws after making the initial cut.
This is my second purchase from Northern Tool, and the second time I've been extremely satisfied with the value and functionality of their products. Their model M1011 Box and Pan Brake is also an excellent product for routine metal fabrication.
Now - will the wife tolerate a brake and shear in the house where I work? Time will tell!

Works as intended
This is not a $3000 shear meant for cutting sheets 8 hours a day, but for what this shear is meant to do, it does it great. I borrowed one from a co-worker to build some brackets with a lot of small gussets. My neighbor watched me use this (retired professional welder, now just a hobbyist) on 11GA steel and after seeing it in action we now both happily own one. You’re not going to shear endless feet of ¼” steel with this, But for numbers of small parts, what a time saver!

Cuts okay, but has other issues.
The cut quality of the shear is good and I am happy with that, but there are some other issues.
It arrived with some shipping damage and a hammer was needed to straighten out one of the feet. In addition, there was welding slag in the bolt holes of the feet. This was easily chipped out. I have also noticed that after running a few tests that my hands are covered in red from the paint job on it!
With a little more care in manufacture, this could be a 5 star product.

Good Tool for the Price
If you are careful and line-up your cuts just right, you can do pretty nice work with this tool. One side of the cut will have to curl downward to miss the lever mount. I used it to cut tape-backed stainless steel and made some nice pieces. Beware that the tool is heavy and will need a solid workbench.

Straight Cut
The information on the site did not say that it is throatless, but it is. I have it clamped down so that I can move it away from the wall for longer cuts.
One specific need I had was to cut thin copper straight with no ripples. I had seen that the short blade on a Beverly shear can leave a slight ripple on thin stock on a cut longer than its blade length. So I bought this for the longer blade. I can cut over 10 inches before needing to move the stock to cut again, and then I am able to line it up against a few inches of the closed blade and still have 6 inches of blade with which to cut. That solves the problem.
For other general purposes it saves time over having to clamp down stock to use an electric shear and saves the hassle of fighting through material with hand shears.

Excellent for the price
I bought this to cut sheet metal for a auto restore im doing. Cuts 20 gauge steel like butter. The only problem i had was assembly , getting that handle return spring on was a chore! Once assembled it works good though.
