Very good tool; difficult to install/remove socket,

"This is a very well-made, quality tool. I have found it to provide plenty of torque in a self-contained, portable package. Also, it has been completely reliable.

However, I do have two criticisms:

1) The tool uses a rocker-style switch for the control trigger. When it is time to apply torque to the fastener, you need to be absolutely sure that you are squeezing the correct "side" of the trigger switch for clockwise or counterclockwise twist. Personally, I would prefer a "single action" trigger switch to activate the motor, and a separate, latching switch for direction of rotation.

2) As other reviewers have noted, installing and removing a socket from the tool's output shaft can be difficult. The tool uses a very stout, spring-loaded pin to retain the socket. The pin needs to be pushed in quite deeply in order to install or remove the socket. I found it impossible to do this without using some kind of "pin pusher" tool. At first, I tried using a heavy-duty paper clip with one end of the wire bent outward, but this did not work all that well because I could not grasp the makeshift tool tightly. A much better solution was an automotive electrical terminal removal tool that I happened to have in my tool box. (This tool is essentially a tapered steel shaft embedded in a round plastic handle.) Unfortunately, Dewalt does not include any sort of tool in the kit, or any guidance in the product manual for dealing with the socket retainer. Moreover, I can't understand why Dewalt used this retainer design. I have used high-torque impact wrenches from three other well-established brands, and they all use a "split hog ring" type socket retainer, which I have found much easier to use, with no need for a special tool. Were it not for this issue with the socket retainer, I would have rated this product 5/5."

"Forget pulling out the air hose and digging through your toolbox for your air powered impact wrench just grab your DeWalt 18V cordless impact.

I love this thing. I haven't found a nut or a bolt that this thing can't budge loose. Make sure to keep that battery packs fully charged as the torque decreases as the packs discharge."

DeWalt Portable Impact Wrench,

"I bought this so I don't have to hook up the air compressor just to rotate tires and to have when I am doing 5 cars and trucks I have as well as friends.

This does the job. I have no doubt that it has 300 ft pounds of torque. Only occasionally does this fail to untorque a lug nut or bolt.

The only failing if you can call it that is that it doesn't have the variable torque feature which is really handy to have. I knew this before I bought it and it has not been an issue as I plan around that.

It is not a toy and is pretty heavy to hold as it is a substantial tool"

"This is a great product. I work on all types of mechanical things from tractors to boats and anything in between. It is easy to use anywhere. It can be deployed quickly and is very powerful. I bought my dad one to travel with. He has a heart condition that makes changing tires on his travel trailer challenging physically. With this impact the worry of having a flat and getting to overexerted is over. Again this product is one I highly recommend."

"Use mine frequently for removing lug nuts and other bolts. Think advertised torque specification is underrated. Haven't had any problems loosening anything. Second battery keeps the job going. Short recharge time. Hardly use air impact since purchasing this."
