Mine works fine fully compressed near horizontal with the pump on the top, but my installation rotates the cylinder upright as it extends, so I can't comment if you're using it strictly horizontally.

Answers

Yes, according to the manufacturer, a double acting piston works this way... Normally when you push the handle down it will pump the piston up. On a Double acting piston when you pull the handle up and push it down the piston will go up on both strokes until it hits your load then it will only go up on a handle down stroke.

The Torin Long Ram Double Piston Hydraulic Jack has an inside diameter of 3/16". The outside diameter is 1-13/16". The pin diameter is 5/8".

What is the ram material it is made out of?

Details:

Past rams for us have rusted, and tear up the seals quickly. (Used outside) Hoping to find a jack like this with a corrosion resistant (or stainless) ram.

The ram is manufactured from hardened steel and has an enamal coating. Seals are available for the jack.

Do both pistons work under load?

Details:

When put under load only one piston works, but when there is no load both pistons work. Should this happen?

Both pistons should work under load. A possible solution maybe as simple as making sure the release valve is turned all the way to the right while lifting under load.

Double Acting Hydraulic Piston Ram I ordered one of these mistakenly thinking it could be used horizontally.When it arrived I inspected the quality of this product and found it to be excellent however, Ineeded to return it. Hydraulic Ram Only one phase of the dual action works, and over 16 oz. of fluid had leaked out of the cylinder when received. I am sending back under warranty. Hopefully Northern Tool will replace it with a properly working cylinder. April 24, 2012

Double piston ram After replacing my leaking 3 ton single piston ram with the Torin 8 ton double piston ram, i've had great results. With the ram extending on the downward and upward stroke, less time is wasted, and the extra lifting capacity was worth the extra money. January 10, 2012

JACKED UP PURCHASED THIS RAM TO REPLACE ONE THAT HAD BEEN STOLEN OFF THE MOTOR HOIST WE USE TO PULL SCREENS ON OUR COOLING TOWER. IT WORKS BETTER THEN THE ORIGINAL RAM AND WAS A STRIGHT BOLT UP INSTALLATION (WE HAVE WELDED A RING AROUND THE BASE TO KEEP THIS ONE FROM WALKING OFF. August 24, 2010

Time saving jack The old jack on my engine hoist, started leaking down internally. And just rasing the boom on the jack, took forever with all the pumps involved. So I replaced it with a Torin long ram double piston 8 ton hydraulic jack. Wow, much faster with the double piston set up. And is a joy to use the control valve, much smoother and positive to operate. I highly recommend this unit for anyone wanting to upgrade their engine hoist, makes jobs a lot easier. catc i purchased this to replace a 3 ton ram on 1 of our engine lifts, the largest engine we lift approx. 600lbs. the first ram did not work very well from the beginning and finally broke. they replaced it with a new one. it worked for a couple of weeks, then we were lifting an engine and the pump part blew out of the ram, dropping the engine and flipping the lift and almost hurting one of our workers. these rams are junk.
