can I use anything for a top

Details:

Most examples I see appear to be CDX or plywood. Can I use like a butcher block type top or something thicker than standard plywood, or will this thickness throw off 2x4 placement, etc...

As long as you use the 2 x 4 for the framing you should be able to use whatever you want for the shelving. A thicker shelf would obviously give you less room between the shelves.

You can certainly use the butcher block. There will however be a protrusion above the 2x4 kit legs braces, but it won't have anything to do with the stability. I use 3/4 ply (I have 2) and both tables are very solid. If you have surplus butcher block, then use that, but I would not spend the money unless you have a specific need.

yes you can.. I used the remaining 3/4 plywood, but im feeling how sturdy it was I and how much i've already put on the shelf shows no bowing of 32''s tall 2x4s

you could use something thicker,shouldnt throw anything off,It would go above the top of the legs but wouldnt make any difference as far a 2x4 placement

You can use any material you desire. You actually mount the top to the 2x4 supports that are connected to the resin legs. In my case I used 2x10's so they extended up past the top of the resin legs and were level to mount the plywood to that. Good luck. You will like this unit.

I am happy with mine as 40" deep, I have seen many workbenches @ 36" deep. I made mine a bit deeper so I could put equipment against the back and on the shelf and still have enough room to work on projects in front.

In the box are the 4 legs for the main unit, additional legs for a smaller shelf unit, several extra items to mount on the side (Tool holder, plasitic grip, etc) and all the necessary screws. The instructions were very clear and easy to follow. Well worth the price.

Aside from the four legs, it also comes with 6 shelf brackets (seen holding the shelving on the top of the bench in then picture), two work holders (clamps) and all necessary hardware to build the bench. All you need to supply is the lumber.

Information on the contents of the 2X4 Anysize Workbench Kit # 90164.
For the main bench, the screws to attach the legs to the 2X4s are included. Also attached to the legs on the outside are two small plastic vise-like holders; and 4 other plastic type holders that tools could be hung on, icluded with the mounting hardware. Finally, there are six plastic holders for 2X4s to make three upper shelves from 2X4s that are fastened to the top of the main bench (you can see them on the bench image if you look close). The screws for them are also part of the package. Since you determine the size of the bench/shelves based on the size of the 2X4s you are using, you can control how big you want to build.

Answers

The ideal front to back measurement is whatever best suits your needs. I made my bench 4'x8' to fit a standard sheet of plywood and that provided me with enough work surface for my needs. When I build my next bench for use as a reloading bench, it will be considerably narrower. Probably on the order of 2 to 2 1/2'.

It is unless you are using it to be able to walk around. 2'5" would be ideal, I'm a shorter guy and built mine 3' deep. If I were to build it again I'd go 2'5" deep - as it is hard to reach the shelving unit and some items on my pegboard back. I do have plenty of work space however including a vice and grinder on each corner.

Previous answers are clear, it is do-able. If you do it, make sure you get casters with foot-locks on at least two of the legs, you don't want the bench moving when you are working on it. Also be aware, most work benches run from 33" to 36" high. This bench is already at the upper (normal) limit, and casters would add another 2-to-4 inches (depending on the wheel size). That might make it too high for comfortable work.

the bottom of each leg is a corner of plastic. If I wanted to add wheels, I would mount a 4x4 chunk to make the leg base square, then I would mount a heavy duty caster. I think this could be done easily and cheaply.

I attached mine to the back of the upper 2x4 shelf and along the vertical shelf 2x4's. Very sturdy. I also mounted pegboard on the inside and outside sides of the top and bottom shelves. Hang all sorts of things like a hose reel, rolls of tape, extra chain saw chains, etc off of the sides. Has been great!

If you can find 12' 2x4's you can build it. Otherwise you'll have to work out a way to splice shorter 2x4's to your 12' length.

This kit includes the legs for the bench, you supply the 2x4s. The lumber that is used to form the top and shelves can be cut to whatever length you wish to form a bench that is as big as 4' x 8'. If longer lumber is used the bench may still work, but the weight that the bench can safely handle will be significantly reduced.

I made mine 8' wide by 40" deep. I used full 8' 2x4's for the width. I made better bracing under the table-top to ensure it will hold up to pounding with a hammer. I would think you could make it 12' if you wanted to, using the same method of bracing for the top. If it were me I would also probably make a 2x4 brace in the middle, both front and back to ensure the strength of the span.

If you have lumber to span that distance you could go that length. If you do I'd build a middle support under the bottom shelving units just to keep it sturdy in the middle so you get no sag.

Unfortuniately, the legs do not have levelers on the bottom of them. However, you can purchase devices at your local hardware store that can help with leveling if necessary.

Nice Wrkbnch I think this is a very good product and well worth the money. It is quite easy to assemble even by yourself. I did have a problem which I believe was my own fault. I transferred two tool boxes from my old workbench and then attempted to slide the new bench into position. One of the legs buckled and broke. I think I had too much weight on it to try to slide it. I did reinforce each leg with an additional 2 X 4 and it is fine. Probably contibuting to my problem was leaving the lower shelf off so I could have storage under the bench. April 27, 2013

Basics Any Size Workbench Kit I needed a workbench.... looked on online... & everyone wanted alot of $$$ for something that was either to big for my use or beat up!! So went to youtube for how to build your own!!! as I was watching online video how too's and Basics Anysize Kit came up.. alot of good videos on this product.. watch them.. it will give you ideas... It went together with ease.. I chose to do 6ft in length and 30"s deep.. everything was included i.e screws and inventory lisT!! I did this by myself within 2 hours.. I spent maybe $86 on the lumber.. Most $$ was the 3/4 plywood BC (sanded on one side) $ 36 that I used on top.. the bottom shelf is 3/4 ply @ $26 and I bought 11 2x4 studs.. had extra!! I already had the light.. Anyway excellent product.. comes together quick and once wood screws in it... it squared right up!! Hope this helps someone April 26, 2013

Awesome Product! I recently started a Firearms business and needed to get a workbench for my gunsmith work. Great Kit for Any Shop! The 2 x 4 Basics Workbench was a great choice for my new workshop! I purchased 2 of these kits and, with just a small amount bracing, was able to create 16' x 2' of very sturdy work space with ample storage underneath. Hardware was provided and, with a minimum number of tools, I was able to finish the project in a few hours! 2x4 Basic anysize Work bench I put this work bench up in my shed to use for a gun amunition reloading station Works great . It went up in about 15 minutes. I used 1/2 in. OSB for the top, it's approx. 5ft long by 4ft. wide, I put two shelves on top with 2x8's to hold books and bullets the top shelf is about 3 in. shorter than the middle shelf. The only problem I have with the kit is that it does not have enough of the side vices' or hangers. August 14, 2012

2x4 basics This project was a total pleasure to build; It couldn't get any easier. Just moved into a small condo with a basement and didn't need a large bench so I went with a 2 x 4 plan. Picked up the lumber, cut it to the size needed and stained it all. After screwing it all together, I found it was very sturdy. I am completely satisfied with the quality of this unit and would highly recommend it to anyone!! August 13, 2012

Little Pricey But Great Quality These are light weight but very sturdy. I used them to build a bench outside my shed so I could refuel my lawn equipment at a comfortable level. I also store bags of potting mix and other stuff on the bottom shelf. I had a few sections left over so I made a canoe stand. Again, great quality and easy to use. I think they are a little over priced but so far I haven't found anything else like them. July 30, 2012
