"I seriously shopped for a trailer for my 14 Foot Motorized Kayak, since with the weight of the motor and battery made it no longer possible to put my trailer on my van roof by myself. Went to Northern Tool, loaded the kit in my van and took it to a trailer Mechanic that put it together for me. Construction is rugged, paint is sharp, easy to handle at the boat ramp and is built to last. All paper work needed for registration was included. With my trailer loaded on this kayak, I can "hitch up" and make it to my favorite fishing ramp in a matter of minutes."

A great bang for the buck,

"I needed a small trailer for a row boat and I did not want to spend a lot of money. When this went on sale I jumped on it. You will not find a better trailer price. The packages were a little beat up when they arrive (UPS could do a better job!!) but all the parts were there. The trailer was simple to build, with the help of a friend, and wiring it was a breeze. I found that it was better to build the frame upside down and then flop it over to finish it. The trailer tracks well behind the car and I have not any issues with the trailer. I do recomend that you check all of the nuts and bolts for a while as they can come loose.
This is good little trailer for light loads and short trips."

"The trailer assembled relatively easily. The wiring for the side markers midway on the trailer both sides would be better suited if the opening for the splice were on the side right wear the marker light mounts and the hole were 'oblong' to allow inserting the wire splice back into the frame. Also a post for the front of the trailer would be handy.
Overall though well worth the money for a light boat trailer."

"I purchased this trailer to haul my 16' Old Town canoe after reading the reviews. As my wife and I have got a little older, flipping the canoe up on my Jeep (with 4 1/2" lift) seems to always hurt one, if not both of us.

First let me say that I own a air compressor and tools, so that made the job pretty easy vs. having to rachet every bolt. The instructions were fairly straight forward, some mis-spellings. I had it together in a little over 3 hours. If you have ever built a model car, this isn't much different just on a larger scale. Everything fit together very well wth no problems. Like others, I was not impressed with the bunks but I knew I wasn't going to use them from the start. Also, do yourself a favor and get a wire snake. I had one from some home remodeling and it made the wiring a snap. Here is a list of modifications that I made;

1. Added a trailer jack. (I had one laying around from an old boat trailer)
2. Added Bearing Buddies. Don't leave home without them.
3. Changed the bunks to 8' 2 X 4's (treated) with new carpet. For this I had to fabricate new brackets. This was to better fit my canoe.
4. Didn't use the rollers. Same as #3.
5. LED lights. Why not?
6. 480 X 12" tires and wheels with a spare. Peice of mind

This is a great little trailer, easpecially for the money. Pulls extemely well. The only modifications that I felt like I HAD to make was the new bunks and bearing buddies and a spare. Over kill, maybe but I like to travel and fish so the larger tire/wheel's, spare tire and bearing buddies offer some peice of mind."

"Have had my trailer for a little over a year now. Have towed my 12' fishing boat from Ohio to South Carolina and back several times. Assembley was easy and straight foward. There were a couple of bolt size problems that took a few minutes to figure out what went where. But over all was very satisfied. As the instructions, ( and experience ) will tell you check all nut and bolt torque after a few hundered miles of towing. I did get the up-grade tires because I tow mainly on highway. Shippng was fast and cheap. Package came in only three days. I would recomend this trailer to anyone who needs a good quality small boat trailer."

"I bought this trailer last year to carry my flat bottom jon boat. I had no trouble assembling this unit. The instructions were easy to follow and assembly time was less then two hours. Things useful to aid in assembly of this unit. The use of a fish tape for pulling the electrical wire to the lights on the back of the trailer. If you don't have a fish tape use a couple of wire coat hangers and tape them together. If you have power tools that will speed up the job. The trailer looks great, and tows like a dream. I would recommend this trailer to anyone looking for a safe and easy way to haul your boat."

"I purchased one of these about a month ago and thus far it is good. The good thing about this trailer is that it can be customized to fit more than just a canoe or jon boat. I'm transporting my 10.5' inflatable zodiac raft on it and it works just fine. Bear in mind I had to modify it by adding bunks to the trailer to create a comfortable fit. It's not easily customizable but it can be done by anyone good with DIY stuff.

It has a very long tongue and that turned out to be a good thing for me. It allows me to get the trailer deeper into the water without getting my car too far in.

My first trip I drove this trailer 450 miles round trip. A bit excessive on 8" wheels and for a trailer basically not meant to travel far or fast. But I traveled the 450 miles at about 75mph and it held up well. The bearings are intact but I'm sure I'll be replacing them soon because of the long trip.

Now the bad parts. I consider myself to be a fairly competent DIY but this trailer was almost a nightmare to assemble. The instructions are extremely poor as it's evident the author does not know English very well. Descriptions are poor and the images are poor. Some parts of the instructions seem to be out of sequence as someone else pointed out that it would have been easier to install the wiring before assembling the base frame.

The coupling on the trailer isn't very good either. It's stiff and can be tough to get a 1 7/8" ball into. A couple of times it stuck close and I wasn't able to get the ball in. At first I thought that the manual was wrong and that I needed a smaller ball until I inspected the coupling more closely and saw that it sticks close. So I had to pop it back open a couple of times with a pair of pliers which isn't too easy to do while it's fully assembled.

The wiring instructions are non existent basically. I've never assembled a trailer before and it had taken me quite some time to figure it out. The actual wiring isn't easy to do unless you already have hooks and pull wires available. I did but because the trailer was assembled first per the instructions my pull wires weren't long enough to fish the wiring through. You basically need a 15' heavy gauge pull wire to accomplish this. Also the instructions on how to lay the running lights are extremely vague. You can figure it out to get it connected but it doesn't exactly say where to stuff the wires after the connections are made. It's not a big deal really but annoying none the less.

There are no strap handles anywhere so it gets a little tricky trying to strap anything down to it. I ripped a strap because while transporting the strap rubbed against protruding bolts. That's just how the trailer is after assembly. So you have to be weary of that when trying to strap things down to the trailer.

It would have been nice if more washers were included to make everything tighter. It's fairly tight the way I did it and some washers were included, but more washers would have been better.

All-in-all it had taken me about 5 hours to assemble the trailer and it would be a good trailer for a competent DIY that wants to transport a canoe or small jon. This is definitely not the type of a trailer for a person that does not have the facilities or tools to correctly assemble it and not for someone that is not a decent DIY. Also, I don't think this would be a good first trailer for anyone unless they know exactly what they're looking for."

The trailer has a VIN stamped on it and a builder certificate with the VIN and builder info came with the trailer. I had to take the certificate and my bill of sale from Northern Tool to the licensing dept. and had no problems getting a plate and title.

Back in the day, 480 X 8" tires and wheels were used all of the time. My first boat/trailer had them and I never had a problem. Just touch the hub from time to time to make sure the bearings aren't overheating.

The rated speed on the highway is 45 miles per hour, you would be able to use these tires until the tread would get bad. It does not list a mileage.

Yes, as long as you do not exceed the weight capacity of the trailer. It is common for a boat to have a beam width slightly wider that the trailer it sits on. Make sure to check you local laws on the matter before ordering.

How can this be modified to carry a kayak (or two)?

Details:

I would like to carry a sea kayak, 17'9", at 55'. The ability to carry an additional kayak, or attach a bike carrier would be helpful as well. Or perhaps even a small cargo box. It does not necessarily have to be modified to carry Yakima rack equipment for example, but possibly.

How would I go about it? Are there accessories available to accomplish this?

The distance between front and rear rollers is 9' 3", distance between the hitch and axle is 11'. Overall length is 154", with a overall width of 52 1/2"

Either one would work great. Item# 12112 is a load range B, and Item# 12110 is a load range C. Load range B has a 590 pound capacity, and load range C has a 760 pound capacity.
