Wood-Burning Stove Tips
- Professional installation of your wood-stove will go a long way in getting the most out of your stove
- Install the stove in a main room where you spend most of your time such as a dining or living room
- Insure that there is proper clearance between the stove, venting system and any combustible items
- Properly season wood by stacking logs off of the ground outdoors in an open area during the hot summer months with a cover only on the very top of the stack
- Firewood should never be larger than 8in. in diameter
- Create smaller fires with soft wood in milder weather
- In colder weather, add three hard wood logs on top of or behind the hot coals – avoid adding one log at a time
- Keep the door of your wood stove closed unless you are loading or stoking the fire
- Avoid spreading the coals out evenly and be sure to remove ash from your stove on a regular basis
- You should never smell smoke in your house while using an EPA certified wood-stove
- Update or install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your house
- Always have a fire extinguisher available
